What is my firearm worth?

A rough guide to second-hand firearm and accessory values in South Africa, from today's dealer prices and the condition.

Quick answer

A second-hand firearm in good condition usually sells privately for about half to two-thirds of what the same model costs new today. One that's hardly used can fetch more, and one that's worn or needs work less. Dealers usually offer less than a private buyer, because they need to resell it.

How the LicenseWatch value check works

  1. Pick your firearm from our list of popular models in South Africa. Search by make or model, tap through by type and make, or scan the barcode on the box.
  2. Choose its condition, from "As new" to "Needs work". Each one is explained in plain words.
  3. Add your accessories: scope, red dot, weapon light, sling, bag, mounts, bipod, spare magazines and more.
  4. See the value of the firearm on its own and with everything together, plus what it would cost to replace new today.

Not on our list? Add it by hand with what it costs new, and we'll still work it out. We list the most popular firearms and accessories, not every model.

Selling a firearm in South Africa

Selling or transferring a firearm has legal steps under the Firearms Control Act: the buyer needs a license for that firearm before it can be handed over. Many owners sell through a dealer, who can also keep the firearm while the buyer's license is processed. Ask your DFO or a dealer how it works. LicenseWatch doesn't buy or sell firearms.

These are estimates only, not a formal valuation. For insurance, estates or legal purposes, get a valuation your insurer or advisor accepts.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a second-hand firearm worth in South Africa?

Usually about half to two-thirds of the price of the same model new today in good condition. Hardly used firearms fetch more, and worn ones less. LicenseWatch works it out for your exact model and condition.

Do dealers pay the same as private buyers?

No. Dealers need to resell the firearm, so they usually offer less than a private buyer would pay.

Are scopes and accessories included?

You can add your scope, red dot, light, sling, bag, mounts, bipod, magazines and more, and see the value of the firearm on its own and with everything together.

Can I use this value for insurance?

No. It's a rough guide, not a formal valuation. Ask your insurer what they need. Many accept a valuation from a dealer.

Is the value check free?

Yes. It's free in the LicenseWatch app.

LicenseWatch is an independent service. It is not SAPS or the Central Firearms Register (CFR), and it is not affiliated with them. It reads the same public SAPS status enquiry you can use yourself.
