SAPS is developing a new Firearms Control Management System (FCMS) for the Central Firearms Register, to replace the old systems that have caused so many delays.
What's known
- The firearm license application process is planned to be available online as part of the system's public interface.
- The rollout starts with a pilot at three police stations in Gauteng.
- The project has had technical delays, because extra processes were moved into the first release.
- SAPS reports on progress twice a year under a court order from 2019.
- No date has been announced for when everyone can use it.
What it means for you right now
Nothing changes yet. Keep applying at your police station with paper forms, keep your SAPS 523 receipt, and check your status on the SAPS website. We'll post an update when online applications open.
