Approved but still no card? Ask for your temporary authorisation

Card printing can take months. SAPS lets approved applicants get a printed temporary authorisation from their DFO in the meantime.

One of the most frustrating parts of the process is getting your approval and then waiting months for the plastic license card. You don't have to wait.

What SAPS decided

On 12 September 2022 SAPS instructed police stations to issue temporary permits to owners whose applications were approved but who were still waiting for their license cards. Stations confirmed that the authorisation is generated on the SAPS system and printed by the DFO once the license is approved.

How to get yours

  1. Wait for your approval SMS, or for the SAPS status page to show Approved.
  2. Go to the police station where you applied. Another station can't help you.
  3. Ask the DFO for your temporary authorisation. Take your ID and your SAPS 523 receipt.
  4. The DFO will explain the conditions before you sign for it.
  5. Use it to collect your firearm from the dealer, if it's a new firearm.

When your card arrives at the station, you collect it and sign the SAPS 86 register.
